Zentek Secures U.S. Patent for Graphene Air Filtration to Cut HVAC Energy Costs
In a major commercial and intellectual property milestone, nanotechnology developer Zentek Ltd. has secured a key United States patent for its proprietary graphene-based air filtration technology. The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) issued U.S. Patent No. 12,616,206, which covers the foundational graphene-silver nanocomposite formulation behind the company’s ZenGUARD™ platform.
The newly issued patent includes a 327-day term extension to compensate for prior examination delays, significantly lengthening its enforceable lifespan in the lucrative American market. This patent complements Zentek’s existing Canadian intellectual property, establishing a robust legal protective shield across both major North American jurisdictions.
Overcoming the High Energy Cost of Clean Indoor Air
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are among the largest consumers of energy in commercial and industrial buildings. Standard high-efficiency air filters, such as MERV 13 filters, typically feature dense physical barriers to trap microscopic pathogens. However, this density creates significant airflow resistance, known as pressure drop.
According to industry estimates, approximately 30% of HVAC energy consumption is directly attributable to overcoming the resistance imposed by standard air filters. Building operators are often forced to choose between superior indoor air quality and energy efficiency.
The ZenGUARD™ technology, developed by lead inventor Dr. Seyyedarash Haddadi and his team, resolves this thermodynamic bottleneck. By applying an ultra-thin, highly active graphene oxide-cationic silver (GO-Ag+) coating to standard filter substrates, the technology achieves high-efficiency pathogen capture without restricting airflow. This allows building operators to maintain clean indoor environments while avoiding the severe energy and carbon emission penalties associated with traditional high-density filtration.
Commercial Strategy and a $5.3 Billion Market Opportunity
The acquisition of the U.S. patent positions Zentek to target the massive American air filtration sector, which was valued at approximately $5.3 billion in 2025. The U.S. market is several times larger than the Canadian market, where Zentek officially launched its ZenGUARD™ Enhanced Air Filters for commercial sale on May 6, 2026.
To facilitate its commercial expansion southward, Zentek is collaborating with its manufacturing and distribution partner, Quality Filters Inc., an established American air filter manufacturer based in Robertsdale, Alabama. The partnership aims to integrate Zentek’s graphene formulation directly into existing manufacturing lines, creating a seamless path to high-volume production once regulatory clearances are finalized.
As a next step, Zentek is actively evaluating U.S. regulatory requirements, including Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registration, to authorize the sale of its antimicrobial and viral-filtration coatings in the United States. Zentek Chief Executive Officer Mohammed (Moe) Jiwan noted that the U.S. and Canadian patents now protect ZenGUARD’s underlying graphene-based indoor air quality technology in the company’s two priority geographies. Securing the foundational patent provides the legal framework necessary to pursue licensing agreements, joint ventures, and direct commercial supply chains in the world’s largest commercial real estate market.
